The purchase of timber often seems like a simple task. But the truth is, many people are fooled by the appearance or the low price, without knowing what they are actually buying. And the quality of the wood can directly affect the final result - be it furniture, flooring, fencing or even decoration.

In this article I will give you practical advice on how to alone to evaluate lumber right in the warehouse or store — even without being an expert.

1. Look for cracks and crevices

→ External cracks are a clear sign that the wood has been improperly dried or stored.
→ Small superficial “cosmetic” cracks are acceptable in some species, but deep ones are not.

2. Check for knots (knots)

→ Small, strong knots = OK for decorative use.
→ Large or loose knots = risk of breakage under load.
→ Dowels on the edge of the board = weakness in the structure.

3. Bending and warping of boards

→ Place the board on the ground or raise it to eye level and look at it lengthwise.
→ If you see "banana" or "twist" — better look for another one.

4. Check for insect traces

→ Small holes (like from a needle) are a signal of wood pests.
→ Press with your fingernail — if the wood is soft and crumbling — avoid it.

5. The color of the tree says a lot

→ Uniform color means proper drying and absence of diseases.
→ Stains, graying or bluish areas = moisture or fungus.

6. Smell is also indicative

→ A fresh, pleasant woody scent is an excellent sign.
→ Smell of mold or rot = stay away.

7. Weight and density

→ Two identical looking boards can weigh differently — the heavier one is usually denser and more durable.
